On Wednesday, February 25, 2026, The Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, Chief Dr. Mujidat Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, has conducted an on-site assessment of the ongoing controlled demolition of the Great Nigeria Insurance (GNI) Plaza, a 23-story building at Balogun Market, Lagos, that was severely damaged by a fire outbreak on December 24, 2025, which compromised its structural integrity.
Following consultations with key stakeholders, the Lagos State Government set up a committee to oversee the strategic demolition to prevent a hazardous collapse.
The incident left thousands of traders displaced and frustrated, as the area was cordoned off for safety. In response to the traders appeal, the Iyaloja-General has visited the site four times since the fire, ensuring progress is being made toward restoring trading activities.
During her latest visit, she met with Arc. Fouad Oki, who emphasized the need for market leaders to enforce timely daily closure of shops to allow demolition teams to work effectively. Both leaders condemned the unsafe practice of installing generators on decked and high-rise buildings, warning that such installations will henceforth be removed.
In her remarks, the Iyaloja-General urged traders to exercise patience, assuring them that the demolition is necessary to make the area safe for everyone and to pave the way for the resumption of commercial activities.
